    Hawke's Bay's Whakatu has set a new record temperature for August


    Despite temperatures in the South Island in the single digits, and road warnings in place due to snow, further North on the East Coast the mercury has reached 24.6 degrees.

    NIWA says that's a typical maximum temperature for February - and is a new monthly temperature record.
