Politicians are remembering Dame Tariana Turia as a leader and advocate for Maori

Politicians are remembering Dame Tariana Turia as a leader and advocate for Maori

Her whanau confirmed she died at Whangaehu Marae in Whanganui in the early hours of this morning.

Dame Tariana founded Te Pati Maori in 2004 after splitting from the Labour Party, who she entered politics with in 1996.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says she'll be remembered for her work establishing Whanau Ora.

Former Prime Minister Sir John Key says she was a trailblazing leader.

Te Pati Maori says she was a matriarch, trailblazer and tireless advocate.

Labour leader Chris Hipkins says she was the very definition of a wahine toa -- and the Green Party says she was a formidable leader.
