Fire crews have shifted their focus to patrolling and monitoring at at Tongariro National Park

The large blaze ripped through nearly 3000 hectares of native bushland.

A rahui's now in place until next Monday and tracks remain closed.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand District Commander Nigel Dravitzki says the rain's helped suppress the fire - but he can't yet confirm it's out.

He says patches of smouldering vegetation can reignite easily in windy conditions - especially in environments that dry out easily.
