The man sentenced to life in jail today for murdering Auckland shopkeeper Janak Patel in 2022, was a homeless meth-addicted deportee,

Frederick Hobson had been kicked out of Australia six months earlier.

The Herald's Craig Kapitan , says Patel's sister, Nilam Patel, was upset to find he was a 501 deportee, saying had there been more oversight, perhaps her brother wouldn't be dead.

Detective inspector Jeff Baber says since the 501 legislation was brought into place in 2015, they've seen an increase in violent crimes.

He says it's just a natural increase of offenders coming back home.
