Meryl Streep had to cut through a fence to evacuate her home amid the LA wildfires

The 75-year-old actress received a mandate to leave her property as the disaster began to unfold across California but her nephew Abe Streep has now revealed that she had to go to extreme measures to escape because a tree was blocking her way out

Writing for The New York Magazine, he explained: "Evacuation mandates were sent across the city. My aunt Meryl Streep received an order to evacuate on January 8, but when she tried to leave, she discovered that a large tree had fallen over in her driveway, blocking her only exit.

"Determined to make it out, she borrowed wire cutters from a neighbor, cut a car-size hole in the fence she shared with the neighbours on the other side, and drove through their yard to escape."

Since the fires began to spread throughout Los Angels in early January, they have so far destroyed almost 20,000 properties, forced 200,000 to leave their homes and have killed 29 people.

The 'Mamma Mia!' star - who has Henry,45, Mamie, 41, Grace, 38, and 33-year-old Louisa with estranged husband Don Gummer - has a $3.6 million home in Pasadena, but the property was not harmed in the disaster.

Several celebrities have lost their homes in the fire, including heiress Paris Hilton and reality stars Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag.

John Goodman - who is known for his roles in 'The Flintstones' and 'Roseanne' - has also seen his home destroyed in the wildfires as his Pacific Palisades property was in the path of the main blaze.

Sir Anthony Hopkins' home is also gone, according to pictures, whilst 'Top Gun: Maverick' star Miles Teller and his wife Keleigh also saw their $7.5million mansion, which they bought in April 2023, wiped out.

Nothing remains of Billy Crystal's sprawling home beyond his tennis courts - which were virtually unmarked despite his house lying in ruins beside the green grounds
