New Zealand's longest serving prisoner has died

Alf Vincent was sentenced 52 years ago to open ended preventive detention, on charges of indecent assault.

He was refused parole 48 times, before being released from Wellington's Rimutaka Prison to a rest home last year.

The 83-year-old had stage five dementia .

Human rights lawyer Tony Ellis says Senior Crown Counsel advised him yesterday Vincent had died.

He says the rest home is taking care of the funeral arrangements
