Part of the bridge closed for repairs for more than two weeks last September - after two trucks were blown into the superstructure.
At the time, NIWA scientists were operating a top-quality weather forecasting model for Emirates Team New Zealand.
They were able to use the model to look at the likelihood of future devastating gusts on the bridge.
Meteorologist Richard Turner says the incident last year may have been down to bad luck.
But he says it's happened once - so it may happen again.
