Just as a major Auckland intersection re-opens - another is about to be ring-fenced by road cones

Auckland Transport's today cut the red-tape to allow traffic through the Wellesley Street West and Albert Street intersection.

But in two days - the nearby Victoria and Albert Street intersection will shut to cars for two years.

It sits right in the middle of construction for the City Rail Link's underground Aotea Square station.

Chief Executive Sean Sweeney says disruption is unavoidable, but the intersection will stay open for businesses and pedestrians.

Disgruntled shop owners have already staged two protests in the city centre - calling for financial aid while the street's shut to cars.
