All change at the Auckland Racing Club's Ellerslie course

All change at the Auckland Racing Club's Ellerslie course

It's being proposed that more than six hectares of land will be sold off for residential development.

The value of the land is estimated at up to 100-million dollars.

Herald racing editor Michael Guerin says the impending sale of the hill and the end of jumps-racing at Ellerslie has angered some.

But he says barely 10 races are run over the hill per season, and the sale would be a financial boon for the soon to be formed Auckland Thoroughbred Racing.

Discussions will be held about where Auckland's two most famous jumping races the Great Northern Steeplechase and Great Northern Hurdles, will be held in the future.

All racing will pause at Ellerslie in March for the laying of new turf, expected to reopen by October 2023.
