Gunfire has been reported during a major police operation in Auckland

The intersection of Campbell Road and Main Highway Ellerslie at Greenlane is closed -- as is the intersection of Church Street and South Eastern Highway, in Penrose.

St John says one seriously injured person has been taken to Auckland Hospital, and a second is in Middlemore with moderate injuries.

A witness says she saw a man with a firearm running down Great South Road, weaving in between cars, and pointing it at police officers chasing him.

She says about three officers with guns were pursuing him - and shouting at him.
