Thousands of litres of oil is expected to have washed into Kaiapoi's rivers

Thousands of litres of oil is expected to have washed into Kaiapoi's rivers

A massive fire destroyed Kaiapoi's Sutton Tools factory over the weekend, flushing quenching oil through the stormwater network.

Environment Canterbury coastal response and readiness lead Emma Parr says they still don't know what impact it will have on the ecosystem.

She says currently there's no dying fish but a handful of oiled birds have had to be transported to a vet for assessment.

Fire and Emergency are still investigating the cause of the fire.
