Contractors are beginning to make headway on our storm battered roads but ex tropical Cyclone Hale has left hundreds still without power.

Sean Hogan has the situation in Tairawhiti.

In the Coromandel, only State Highway 25 between Tapu and Te Puru remains closed due to a large slip.

All other roads in the region are open, some with restrictions.

Meanwhile, State Highway One south of Taihape - between Mangaweka and O-hinga-iti - is now closed because of flooding.

The South Island isn't immune, with significant surface flooding on State Highway One at Koromiko, after nearly 100 millimetres of rain fell in six hours near Picton.
