Police say a report into a fatal shooting raises issues around where lethal force is required to defend themselves

Police say a report into a fatal shooting raises issues around where lethal force is required to defend themselves

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found a Police officer wasn't justified in shooting dead Tangaru-Noere Turia in South Auckland's Papatoetoe in 2021.

The 34 year old was deported from Australia as a 501 four years prior, and was inside his grandfather's house during a stand-off, where he also shot at his neighbours window.

Police say Turia emerged unexpectedly from the house armed with a shotgun before being shot.

The Authority has found the officer used excessive and unreasonable force and Turia was given no time to comply with the request to drop the weapon.
