Otago researchers suspect an immunity gap caused a cluster of whooping cough deaths in the North Island

They've found the most likely explanation for the three deaths is a maternal-infant immunity gap, caused by three factors.
Low maternal vaccination rates, delayed infant immunisations, and reduced exposure combined to bring about lower immunity.
Lead Author Professor Peter McIntyre says raising awareness and improving access to the vaccine is crucial.
