Two homes have been evacuated and multiple structures remain under threat because of a fire near Glasnevin in the Hurunui District

Firefighters have contained the blaze, currently five hectares in size.

Fifteen ground crews remain on the scene, but the two helicopters working earlier have been stood down for the night.

Heavy machinery is on its way to assist with firefighting efforts.

There are evacuation centres at the Waipara Hall, and at the Tin Shed for those on the south side of the Waipara River.

State Highway 1 remains closed, and will be for some time.
