A man who chased the Christchurch terrorist away from Linwood mosque has appeared in court on an assault charge

Open Justice reports Abdul Aziz Wahazadah represented himself on one charge of assault with intent to injure in March.

He denies the charge and elected a judge alone trial, and was remanded on bail.

The 50-year-old was recognised as a hero for chasing the gunman from Linwood Islamic Centre in 2019 - and throwing a rifle and eftpos machine at him.

Wahazadah will next appear in court in July.
