Tensions are warming with Australia - as it hardens its stance on 501 deportees

The Australian Government's revising Ministerial Direction 99 - which considers a person's ties to Australia before kicking them out.

Foreign Minister Winston Peters plans to urgently discuss the matter - saying we don't want people with little to no connection being deported to New Zealand.

But the ABC's Tom Lowrey says the Australian Government wants community safety put before anything else.

He says essentially it's admitted the direction it issued - wasn't working in practice.
