    The winter wardrobe won't be needed for long, with the worst of today's wintry blast largely behind us


    Several trucks remain stuck in snowy conditions at Burkes Pass between Fairlie and Tekapo.

    Milford Road is closed due to snow and tree fall.

    Heavy Snow Watches for Fiordland, Southland, southern Otago and Stewart Island have lifted, but snow showers may continue to low levels.

    Weather Watch's Phillip Duncan says today's wind chill is brutal, and will be followed by frost tonight.

    He says the good news, is it starts to warm up again in a day or two.

    In the north, Taihape remains under a heavy snow watch, while parts of the upper North Island could see thunderstorms and strong winds from this afternoon.
