It's time to dust of the skis and hit the slopes this Queen's birthday weekend

It's time to dust of the skis and hit the slopes this Queen's birthday weekend

Mt Ruapehu is opening its Sky Waka gondola and Happy Valley to the public today.

The rest of the mountain won't open until July 3.

Ruapehu Alpine Lifts chief operating officer Travis Donoghue says they're preparing for thousands of ski and snowboarding enthusiasts this weekend.

He says it will be dependent on the weather but traditionally this weekend is popular for people wanting to kick off the beginning of winter.
