Light snow is being reported around the city - from Karori to Broadmeadows.

This morning a bus became stuck in ice in Johnsonville following a heavy hailstorm overnight, and more than 20 flights have been cancelled at Wellington Airport.

A major search operation was carried out for two kayakers seen in Wellington harbour around 8am - who ended up safe in Petone.

And residents on the southern coast are bracing for six-metre high waves, peaking at high tide at 9 tonight.

Meanwhile, the region's hospitals are reporting higher than usual demand, especially in emergency departments.

And Wellington is waiting to hear whether it'll be moving down from Alert Level Two at midnight - with an announcement due at 1pm.
