The shockwave from Tonga's volcanic eruption was detected in the Bay of Plenty

The shockwave from Tonga's volcanic eruption was detected in the Bay of Plenty

The regional council's live monitoring sites showed a spike in atmospheric pressure on Saturday night, as the shockwave passed through the area.

Evidence of tsunami waves was also recorded in Tauranga harbour -- peaking between 1 and 2 on Sunday morning -- and in the Kaituna River.

Data Services Manager Glenn Ellery says it shows unpredictable surges may not always be easily seen, but could get swimmers and fishermen into trouble.
