The shockwave from Tonga's volcanic eruption was detected in the Bay of Plenty

The regional council's live monitoring sites showed a spike in atmospheric pressure on Saturday night, as the shockwave passed through the area.
Evidence of tsunami waves was also recorded in Tauranga harbour -- peaking between 1 and 2 on Sunday morning -- and in the Kaituna River.
Data Services Manager Glenn Ellery says it shows unpredictable surges may not always be easily seen, but could get swimmers and fishermen into trouble.
