President Jeremy Kilgour says the death isn't easy to process, especially for friends and others in the same hall.
He says they're working closely with the University to support students.
Vice-chancellor Professor Grant Edwards has set off an internal review.
Police aren't commenting on how long before the dead student was found.
In 2019, the body of Canterbury University student Mason Pendrous was found weeks after his death.
