The suburb of Blockhouse Bay in Auckland is living up to its name

The suburb of Blockhouse Bay in Auckland is living up to its name

Some local residents are opposing a Kainga Ora housing development.

An online petition calling for the building of 68 properties on Marlowe and Bolton Streets to be stopped, has attracted more than 1200 signatures.

It will replace the existing properties on the site which are mostly filled with older people.

The Blockhouse Bay Action Community group is concerned housing will be opened up to younger people, contrary to what the land was set aside for.

Spokesperson Benji Nathan says there's a number of primary and intermediate schools in the area, suggesting the volume of cars will increase the risk to children.

A public engagement meeting with Kainga Ora will be held this Saturday at the Blockhouse Bay Market Day.
