More rain is on its way for sodden areas across the country

MetService has issued severe weather warnings for many places in the west and north of the country - including Fiordland, Westland, Tasman, Auckland and Northland.

Snow is also expected to fall in the South Island as temperatures plummet.

Meteorologist John Law says today's rain is expected to be accompanied by thunderstorms in the top of the North.
