The Department of Corrections is "urgently pulling" ads from Waikato and Bay of Plenty buses, after they were deemed racist and offensive

The Department of Corrections is "urgently pulling" ads from Waikato and Bay of Plenty buses, after they were deemed racist and offensive

The ads urged job candidates to "become the change for our Waikato whanau" and featured a Maori woman wearing a prison officer uniform.

In a statement to our newsroom, the Corrections Deputy Chief Executive Maori, Topia Rameka, says he wasn't aware of the advertisement before receiving complaints about it last Friday.

He's asked for online versions of the ad to be removed immediately, and for bus ads to be removed as soon as possible.

Earlier this year, a Corrections TV ad was pulled following complaints about racial stereotyping.
