Christchurch is gearing up for the inaugural direct flight from San Francisco to the city, on Sunday

The United Airlines route will be the only direct connection between the South Island and the US, flying three times a week.

The last was Air New Zealand's Christchurch to Los Angeles service, which ended in 2006.

Canterbury Employers' Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive, Leeann Watson says it's great to see airlines investing in the area.

She says it's a strong indication of their interest and confidence in the city, and wider-region.

Aviation lovers will be able to catch a glimpse of the first landing from the the Airport's Plane spotters' Park on Pound Road.
