'Succession' won Best Drama Series for the third time at the Golden Globe Awards

The family media saga added to its prizes from 2021 and last year to take home the coveted accolade for its fourth and final season, winning ahead of '1923', 'The Crown', 'The Diplomat', 'The Last of Us' and 'The Morning Show', and creator Jesse Armstrong admitted it was "bittersweet".

Joined on stage by the cast and others involved in the production, he told the audience at the Beverly Hilton hotel: "Thank you very much indeed.

"So it's been said it's a team effort this show, which is one of the reasons why it's so lovely to do.

" I'd like to accept this on behalf of the whole 'Succession' writers room, the directors, my fellow producers, the extraordinary subtle and supple cast. And the crew, who have worked so dedicatedly and brilliantly on four seasons of the show and we've been supported all the way through by HBO.

"It has been such a wonderful team to work with, we decided it was the right time to end the show and that was bittersweet because I finally bought some shoes that were appropriate for awards dos and this might be the last time I get to wear them.

"It is bittersweet but things like this make it more sweet. Thank you very much indeed."

Meanwhile, 'The Bear' won Best Musical or Comedy Series, having seen stars Ayo Edebiri and Jeremy Allen White pick up lead acting accolades earlier in the evening.

The FX-produced series beat out last year's winner 'Abbott Elementary' as well as 'Barry', 'Jury Duty', 'Only Murders in the Building' and 'Ted Lasso' to take the prize, and cast member Lionel Boyce sheepishly accepted the prize.

He laughed: "I don't know why they chose me. I guess maybe we thought we wouldn't win."

The Best Limited Series, Anthology Series or TV Movie went to 'Beef', and creator Lee Sung Jin thanked the person involved in his real-life road rage incident that had inspired the show.

After thanking those involved with the project, he said: "I'd be remiss not to think that driver. Sir, I hope you honk and yell and inspire others for years to come."

The show was nominated for the award alongside 'All the Light We Cannot See', 'Daisy Jones and The Six', 'Fargo', 'Fellow Travelers' and 'Lessons in Chemistry'.
