Auckland University research shows conflicts of interest can influence prescriptions, research and clinical guidelines.
Some New Zealand drug companies have voluntarily revealed their payments to health workers, since 2022.
But Associate Professor David Menkes calls for disclosure to be mandatory - as a first step towards managing harm.
He says calls for the Government to tighten up the system and improve reporting - to provide a clearer idea of how much cash and other benefits are going from companies to doctors.
