A new system to quickly open the flood prone Wairoa River to the sea is now up and running

A new system to quickly open the flood prone Wairoa River to the sea is now up and running

Locals had criticised the Regional Council for not opening the river bar fast enough during last year's flood, which caused 40-million dollars in damage and affected 400 homes.

Engineers have worked with locals to design a new funnel shaped crest at the end of Kopu Road, so the mouth can be opened much faster before heavy rain.

It was put in place last month, with the latest maintenance done two weeks ago.

Construction is also scheduled to start in the New Year on a more permanent fix for the river mouth.
