MetService warns the heavy rain and strong winds are likely to intensify as we move into the evening.
Warnings are scattered across the eastern North Island and upper South Island - with residents urged to take caution.
The Otorohanga and Waipa districts have already declared states of emergency - on the back of widespread downpours in recent days.
Manawatu, Whanganui and Tararua could see the worst of the next bout of rain - with Horizons Regional Council bracing itself for flooding, slips and rising rivers.
Metereologist John Law, says much of the North Island's in for a windy night.
He says severe gales could gust up to 130 kilometres an hour in exposed areas - along the eastern coast.
Law says those winds will also help generate rough seas around the coast - with wave heights of up to seven metres around Wellington and the Wairarapa coast tonight.
