Shakira has been forced to cancel her forthcoming award show appearances in the US for "personal" reasons

The 'Hips Don't Lie' hitmaker has pulled out of the Latin Grammy Awards on November 17 at Las Vegas' Mobile Arena and the American Music Awards on November 20 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles because of private matters.

Taking to her Twitter account on Monday (07.11.16), she said: "Due to personal matters, I won't be able to travel to Las Vegas & LA to attend the @LatinGRAMMYs or the @AMAs this year.

"I will be accompanying @carlosvives in spirit @LatinGRAMMYs, celebrating this incredible year that we've shared together with #LaBicicleta (sic)."

Although the 39-year-old singer refused to elaborate further on the reasons behind her cancellation, the curly-haired beauty recently admitted that her husband Gerard Pique's busy soccer schedule means she's regularly anchored down in Barcelona.

She said: "It's like being married to a soldier, except that he doesn't die in battle.

"Gerard is anchored to Barcelona and can't travel - they get a few days off a month, but otherwise he has to be there for his team every day pretty much, training and playing matches.

"This has been a learning curve for me, because I like to travel a lot and I'm like, 'What do you mean, you can't go? Let's go!' "

Despite her frustration, Shakira is keen for her sons Milan, three, and Sasha, 22 months, to grow up playing sports.

She explained: "But it's interesting too, because I have been playing solo for all of my life and it's very different to live with a person who has to think about his team and be mindful of them as well as of himself. That's why I want my kids to learn all about sports even if they don't end up doing it professionally - the way it shapes the personality of children is just fantastic."
