Bore owners have done the tests and brought the results to the attention of Hawke's Bay Regional Council.
The levels were found to fail national drinking water standards.
Principal groundwater scientist Janine Barber says other bore owners won't know if elevated levels of arsenic are present, unless they're specifically testing for it.
And she says bores in regions such as Waikato, Manawatu, and Canterbury, may also see higher levels of arsenic due to the country's volcanic source rocks.
