The principal judge of the Youth Court says a new report on youth crime shows the importance of early and active intervention

The Government-commissioned report found targeting children young with social and mental health services is cheaper and more effective than harsh punishments or prison sentences.
It also found that intervention should start as early as birth.
Judge John Walker says the report shows how youth crime is intergenerational, and often linked to problems within families and communities.
He says it provides great ideas like regular health checks for toddlers, and better mental health support for mothers.
