This follows footage of the marsupial on the outskirts of Dunedin surfacing on social media.
The location is hundreds of kilometres away from any known wallaby population.
Landcare Research scientist Bruce Warburton says it's likely the animal was brought to Dunedin by a person.
He says some hunters like their quarry to live close to home, but sometimes releases are driven by guilt.
Warburton says hunters might kill a mother with a joey in the pouch and release the baby.
