Robbie Cederwall died when a ute, with several people riding in the tray, rolled at Rothesay Bay.
Sobbing could be heard in the North Shore District Court after the accused admitted dangerous driving causing death, failing to stop to ascertain injury and excess breath alcohol for a person under 20.
The 18 year old's name remains suppressed for now.
His lawyer, Steve Cullen, says his client has been caught up in quite devastating circumstances.
He's in counselling and wants to go through the restorative justice process.
