Riwawa Kahu appeared for sentencing at New Plymouth District Court, for a fight after the All Blacks and Argentina test match in September last year.
Kahu was in a brawl at a bar, about 500 metres from Yarrow stadium.
He put his thumb into a man's eye, and despite surgery, the 30-year-old lost his right eye.
Defence lawyer Paul Keegan told the court of Kahu's genuine remorse, and of a reparation payment of 15-thousand dollars made to the victim.
Judge Chris Sygrove acknowledged this, and sentenced Kahu to 12-month's home detention.
