The strength of retail spending has caught the market by surprise

Figures out today show total retail sales rose 1.1 percent in the three months to June, after a modest 0.3 percent rise in the March quarter.
The market was expecting a lift of just zero point three percent.
Eleven of the 15 retail industries had higher sales volumes.
Total retail sales rose by 305 million dollars, compared to a 76 million rise in the March quarter.
