August figures from Paymark show a 1.4 percent lift in spending.
Once fuel transactions were removed, that increase was still 1.1 percent.
Overall spending using Paymark in August totaled $5.1 billion, which is 6.5 percent higher than in August 2017.
That's up on the 4.6 percent per annum averaged in the first half of this year.
