6 September 2018
About 10 people have been taken to hospital after the landslide, along a long ridge in the rural town of Atsumi.
The quake has caused widespread power outages, blocked roads, and caused a fire in the Mitsubishi Steel factory.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has set up a command centre to co-ordinate relief and rescue, and says his top priority is to save lives.
Public broadcaster NHK says there are no reported deaths to date.
