Dua Lipa: Pop singer praises fans thrown out of Shanghai concert for waving LGBTQI flags

The UK singer says she was "horrified" by the turn of events, which saw fans forcibly removed from the concert by security guards.

Pop singer Dua Lipa has praised the bravery of fans who were forcibly removed from her concert in Shanghai for standing up to dance during the show and reportedly waving pro-gay rights flags.

Videos posted to social media showed security guards pulling female concertgoers from their seats and escorting others from the venue on Wednesday.

The scuffles in the middle of the crowd inside the National Exhibition and Convention Centre prompted an emotional response from the singer, who addressed the issue during her performance, calling for calm.

"I want to create a really safe environment for us all to have fun," she said in a video posted online. "I want us all to just have a really good time."

She also later issued a lengthy statement on Twitter.

"I am proud and grateful that you felt safe enough to show your pride at my show. What you did takes a lot of bravery," she wrote.

"I was horrified by what happened and I send love to all my fans involved," she said, adding that she would return to Shanghai "when the time is right" and hoped she would then see "a room full of rainbows".

Homosexuality is not illegal in China but LGBTQI activists increasingly have faced official pressure in recent years.
