Beauden Barrett kicked just two of his six conversion attempts, while South African opposite Handre Pollard kicked five of six.
All Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster says they opted to keep with Barrett.
He says Barrett claimed two of his four but then hit the post with his last two.
New Zealand lead the Rugby Championship by six points from South Africa with Argentina a further two points back, after the Pumas beat the Wallabies 23-19 on the Gold Coast.
