Evidence once again that Mount Ruapehu is no place for inexperienced climbers
Evidence once again that Mount Ruapehu is no place for inexperienced climbers, and the crater lake is dangerous
23 September 2018
A man died after falling into the lake yesterday and other climbers say the area is icy underfoot, which may have contributed to the accident.
Ruapehu Mayor Don Cameron is urging people to take care on the mountain, and not get too close to the crater lake or any cliffs.
Cameron says if you're an experienced climber or skiier, you should be aware of the conditions.
But anyone who's not familiar with the area should take someone who does know what they're doing.
