Fire Service figures for Dunedin show there were just 15 furniture fires in North Dunedin last year, compared with 124 back in 2013.
Fire and Emergency Otago risk management officer Mark Bredenbeck's told the Otago Daily Times they've definitely noticed the decline.
He says the number of nuisance fires has dramatically decreased in the last 18 months.
Police data also shows only 10 public disorder offences during this year's orientation week - as opposed to the usual 30 or 40.
