Michael Duff inflicted head injuries on the child similar to a car smash or being kicked in the head by a horse.
Duff has a history of violent offending, including hitting his former partner several times with a hammer, breaking her pelvis.
The 42 year old also been jailed in the past for aggravated robbery, two assaults and presenting a firearm at a law enforcement officer.
The Mongrel Mob member was descried in court as a methamphetamine user who had had a poor childhood.
The baby's mother was not present, but the court heard she was too upset to complete a victim impact statement.
