Emergency services are at the scene of a serious crash on State Highway One, south of Whangarei

Two cars crashed just before four this afternoon and both lanes are blocked.

Initial indications suggest three people have been injured.

The nature of their injuries at this stage is unknown.

The road is closed near Totara Road and there are diversions in place at Salmon and Springfield Roads for cars and other small vehicles.

However, it's not suitable for heavy vehicles or campervans.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area.
