Chart of the Day: Donald Trump, immigration and healthcare motivate Americans before midterms

The midterm elections are less than a week away, and there's a battle between Republicans and Democrats to convince voters to get to the polls. In a country with non-compulsory voting, here's what's motiving Americans to get to the ballot box.

The economy, healthcare costs and President Donald Trump are top of mind for many Americans as they head to the polls for Tuesday's midterm elections.

With a number of tight House races, the issues where the parties are split might be most telling.

Two subjects on Republicans' minds — immigration and taxation — also frequently star in Mr Trump's Twitter feed, whereas climate change, which sits as third most important to Democrats, barely rates a mention at last place for Republicans.

It's worth noting the US Studies Centre poll was conducted in early October, so there's a chance things have shifted in the past few weeks, which saw a mass shooting fuelled by anti-Semitism and an increase in vitriolic immigration rhetoric.
