An alliance between KiwiRail, NZTA and North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery - has won the London-based Institution of Civil Engineers People's Choice Award.
KiwiRail acting chief executive Todd Moyle says winning the award over city railways in India, innovative British windfarms and a huge river bridge in Scotland is a testament to Kiwi ingenuity.
He says they've taken number eight wire thinking, and turned it into engineering excellence recognised around the world.
