Part of Goat Creek Bridge on State Highway 73 has been eaten away by the swollen Otira River.
Motorist Jess Dempsey says the weather was absolutely terrible.
She lives in Otira, and discovered the bridge just east of town had been washed out.
Another nearby bridge - Kellys Creek - was also flooded last night, with water covering part of the road.
