25-year-old Samuel Pearson is alleged to have broken into a Pukete family's home through a rear door on October 18.
After being woken, the father confronted the alleged burglar and the two tussled.
In the Hamilton District Court today, Pearson pleaded not guilty to aggravated wounding, assault with a weapon with intent to escape, assault using a knife as a weapon and aggravated burglary.
He's been remanded in custody to reappear in February.
