A call for healthcare providers to cut back prescriptions for dangerous dementia drugs

A University of Otago study has found 40 percent of dementia patients are being prescribed anticholinergics to control Parkinson's Disease symptoms - such as an over-active bladder and depression.
But lead researcher Doctor Sharmin Bala says they can worsen dementia symptoms - and need to be carefully monitored.
She says patients should receive regular check-ups and alternatives should be provided wherever possible.
Bala says the dangerous drugs are often inappropriately prescribed - with some even available over the counter.
